Intertwining the lives of two families — the Trasks and the Hamiltons, East of Eden also introduces antihero Cathy Ames, who, in the book, is seen as a manipulative wife who leaves Adam behind to raise their twin sons, Cal and Aron.
Adam Trask had a similar upbringing with his half-brother Charles by their father Cyrus, a self-proclaimed Civil War hero who lost his first wife, Adam’s mother, and remarried Charles’ mother to sire Charles.
