Netflix has released the first trailer for Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the latest chapter in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan‘s anthology series. Watch it above.
The haunting 56-second clip begins with a theater curtain opening to reveal a nearly empty stage with just a piano and the C key playing repeatedly by itself. The scene then shifts to an ominous voiceover: “Lizzie Borden took an ax. Gave her mother 40 whacks.” We don’t see Lizzie, but we hear the repeated wielding of an ax aimed at what is assumed to be her mother. The clip ends with a stunned-looking and blood-covered Lizzie and another voiceover saying, “When Lizzie saw what she had done, she gave her father 41.”
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story tells the story of how one young woman changed what the world believed a killer could be — all it took was an ax. The installment follows Ella Beatty‘s Lizzie — the series’ first female “monster” — alongside Vicky Krieps as Bridget Sullivan, Rebecca Hall as Abby Borden and Charlie Hunnam as Andrew Borden.

Per the official logline: When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power and revenge. The gruesome unsolved murders that follow don’t just shock the world — they give birth to an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous and gloriously free.
The cast also includes Billie Lourd, Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson and Jessica Barden.
The Lizzie Borden Story is created and written by Brennan and executive produced by Murphy, Brennan, Max Winkler, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Louise Shore, Nissa Diederich, Todd Kubrak, Carl Franklin and Tanase Popa. Winkler and Sarah Adina Smith direct.
It’s set to premiere September 17 on Netflix.
