‘Never Have I Ever’s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan Jokes “Devi’s Dead” While Discussing Possible Return, If “All The Stars Lined Up”

After three years, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has some thoughts about where her Never Have I Ever character would be today.

The actress cautioned against “selective listening” as she discussed the possibility of reviving the Netflix coming-of-age series from creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, which ran for four seasons from 2020 to 2023.

“If the right script and the right time in everyone’s life occurred, and all the stars lined up, sure,” she told Netflix. “But that hasn’t happened yet. I don’t foresee it happening anytime soon.”

Ramakrishnan continued, “I just love Devi so much. I truly am a fan of the show, and I would never wanna do anything that compromises the beautiful story that we made, that truly made history in the YA genre, but also a really heartfelt story that means a lot to people. I don’t want to rush into another version of the story for a check, because I really love Davi and everyone involved with the show. So, I wanna do it right.

“So, that’s my way of encapsulating that all into, ‘So, Devi’s dead,’” she joked.

In Never Have I Ever, Ramakrishnan played first-generation Indian-Americana teenager Devi Vishwakumar, who attempts to juggle her social life at a Los Angeles high school with her family life following the death of her father.

Recalling that the show was “loosely based on my childhood and the loss of a parent,” Kaling recently explained that Never Have I Ever was the first part of a TV trilogy “loosely based” on her life, followed by HBO Max’s Sex Lives of College Girls and Hulu’s Not Suitable for Work.

“That’s just the pretentious way that I like to frame my career now,” joked Kaling, noting that she didn’t intend to create a spiritual trilogy.
