Is Prime Video’s God of War in production?

Yes, though the shoot had some complications when Ryan Hurst sustained a serious injury four months into shooting. Pre-production began at the end of 2025. The plan remains to film two seasons back to back.

Who is in the cast of Prime Video’s God of War show?

Ryan Hurst was originally cast as Kratos, the titular character of the video game. Kratos is a Spartan by birth and a god by nature, raised in martial culture. After rising in the ranks and commanding armies to protect his homeland, he made a fateful deal with the Greek God of War, Ares, exchanging his soul for being victorious in battle.

Following Hurst’s tearing a bicep while performing a stunt during production in June, as first reported by TMZ, Deadline reported that the role of Kratos was being recast. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM reached out to Dave Bautista to initiate talks shortly after they made the decision to recast the role.

Bautista, who is known for portraying Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy film trilogy and for more recently voicing Tagah in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, closed his deal to take on the role in late August after reports that he was in talks started circulating at the beginning of the month.

Following Hurst’s casting as Kratos, Deadline broke the news that Teresa Palmer (A Discovery of Witches, Warm Bodies) was cast as Phoebe/Sif, wife of Thor and goddess of family.

Max Parker (Boots), will star as Heimdall, the Watchman of Asgard and one of Odin’s sons. Heimdall is a god in his own right, and he has the ability to anticipate what might happen in any moment. He’s constantly looking fore ways to improve his status and position in the hierarchy because he feels unappreciated by his father. Heimdall first appears in the second God of War game, God of War Ragnarök.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will portray Thor in the mythology-themed video game adaptation, as Deadline first reported. The God of Thunder is haunted by the price he paid in a war he fought long ago, making him a shadow of his former self who resorts to alcohol to escape what haunts him. He was once loyal to Asgard and his father’s right-hand man. He keeps his wife and children at arm’s length, further isolating himself, but his power lurks beneath the surface.

Ed Skrein (Jurassic World Rebirth) will portray Baldur, Odin’s youngest son and most dangerous weapon. Baldur was cursed as a boy, and the curse took away his ability to feel physical sensation and pleasure.

Deadline first reported Mandy Patinkin’s (Homeland, The Princess Bride) casting as Odin. Odin is the All-Father, or patriarch and most powerful Aesir god. He constantly seeks knowledge to prevent the prophecy of Ragnarök, or the Norse end of the world. He also presents an antagonist for Kratos.

Callum Vinson (Chucky, Long Bright River) will portray Atreus, the 10-year-old son of Kratos. Raised almost entirely by his mother Faye, Atreus grew up in a remote cabin, where he honed his archery skills and developed an affinity for animals. Things change, though, when he is left with his distant father, who he barely knows, after the death of his mother.

At the end of January 2026, Alastair Duncan (God of WarGod of War Ragnarök) became the first voice actor from the video games to reprise their role in the Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures Television TV series. Duncan will portray cheery and chatty Mimir from Celtic lands. Jeff Gulka (The X-FilesStargate SG-1) and Danny Woodburn (The WitcherBookie) are set to play brothers, Sindri and Brok, in recurring roles.

Sonya Walger (For All Mankind) will portray Freya, Vamir goddess and princess who wields ancient and powerful magic. She is Odin’s ex-wife and former queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title she gained on her wedding day. Her unhappy marriage to Odin resulted in her exile as well as being cut off from her family and native land, Vanaheim. She has lived alone in Midgard for a century, and she is called the Witch of the Woods.

Louis Cunningham, Ben Chapple, Evelyn Miller and Island Austin will play recurring roles of Modi, Magni, Gna and Thrud, respectively. Modi, Magni and Thrud are children of Thor and Sif, with Magni being the eldest son, Modi the middle child, and Thrud, their youngest. Gna is Odin’s Valkyrie commander.

What will Prime Video’s God of War show be about?

Based on the popular PlayStation video game, God of War follows father and son, Kratos and 10-year-old Atreus, as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their late wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Will there be multiple seasons of Prime Video’s God of War show?

Yes, the adaptation was officially greenlit in December 2022, and then, when Emmy-winning director E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) came aboard, the show received a two-season order.

Who else is behind Prime Video’s God of War TV show?

At first, Rafe Judkins, Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus were attached to the project with Judkins in the showrunner role as well as an executive producer alongside Ostby and Fergus. The trio left the project in October 2024 after completing multiple scripts for the first season.

Ronald D. Moore came aboard as showrunner shortly after Deadline broke the news of creative changes. Toye, who will direct the first two episodes of the action-adventure series, joined the creative team Dec. 1, 2025. God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.

The video game was created by David Jaffe, who also created Twisted Metal which received a series adaptation on Peacock. Jaffe made some comments about the series’ first-look image, released at the end of February 2026. This was before Bautista had taken over as Kratos, though.
