‘Hangover’ Architects Jon Lucas & Scott Moore On Keeping Comedy In Theaters With ‘Spa Weekend’ – Crew Call Podcast

On today’s Crew Call, we talk to Spa Weekend directors, writers and producers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, not just about how their new movie came together with Anna Faris, Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann and Michelle Buteau, but the current state of big screen comedy and why major studios became so stubborn to make them. And we’re not talking hybrid genre comedies ala Deadpool & Wolverine (superhero crossed with R-rated laughs), Get Out (horror meets ha-ha), the last two Bad Boys (action comedies) or even this past summer’s big success Scary Movie (horror plus legacy comedy). Pure original comedies. Why did studios give up? Why did the genre jetison to streaming? Did Lucas and Moore’s original screenplay for The Hangover set the bar so high back in 2009 (near $470M global gross in what became a trilogy) that all subsequent comedies would fall short? The duo also got another comedy franchise off the ground back in 2016 and 2017, Bad Moms, and we talk with them about the current state of that feature series.
