EXCLUSIVE: In her followup to her Emmy-nominated role as Carolyn Bessette in FX’s Love Story, Sarah Pidgeon has been tapped for the last remaining female lead opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Netflix‘s limited series Enigma Variations.
Also joining the adaptation of the bestselling novel by André Aciman are Younger star Peter Hermann, Pidgeon’s fellow Tony-nominated Stereophonic cast member and Succession alumna Juliana Canfield, as well as Italian actress Francesca Cavallin.
Written by Amanda Kate Shuman and to be directed by Oliver Hermanus, Enigma Variations tells the story of Paul (Taylor-Johnson), a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him across ten transformative years. It’s an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love —and in a world of endless choices, it asks the question: will we know when we’ve found the one?

Pidgeon plays one of Paul’s female partners, Chloe, whom he sees every four years in the book. The other two are played by previously cast Alicia Vikander (Claire) and Riley Keough (Maud).
Hermann will play Isaac, Canfield will portray Luciana. Devon Terrell was previously announced as another of Paul’s partners, Manfred, Nicholas Podany as Harlan and Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Noah.
Shuman, who serves as showrunner, executive produces alongside Michael Ellenberg, Christina Malach and Lindsey Springer for Media Res, Aciman, Monica Levinson and Hermanus. Media Res is the studio.
Pidgeon and Canfield starred together both in the off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Stereophonic, each earning a 2024 Tony nomination for Featured Actress In a Play.
For the past several months, Pidgeon has been riding the success of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette opposite Paul Anthony Kelly, with her performance as Calvin Klein associate Bessette landing her an Emmy nomination. This marks her first TV role since Love Story. While the FX limited series was still airing, she was cast opposite Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal in the Amazon MGM Studios movie Honeymoon with Harry, which is in post-production. Pidgeon is repped by Gersh, Anonymous Content and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Canfield is known for playing Jess Jordan on HBO’s Succession. She next stars in the action thriller feature F.A.S.T. written by Taylor Sheridan. Canfield is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
In addition to his starring turn opposite Sutton Foster on Darren Star’s cult comedy Younger, Hermann is known for his recurring roles on Blue Bloods and on Law & Order: SVU opposite his wife, Mariska Hargitay. He is repped by Gersh.
