James Gunn Gives DCU Update Amid Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger & Debunks Batman’s ‘The Brave & The Bold’ Report

James Gunn is clearing up several reports about DC Studios projects amid the Paramount–Warner Bros. merger.

The merger of the two media companies is at a standstill, but that doesn’t mean that development of superhero franchises at DC is on hold.

Answering a fan query on Threads about the current status of DCU development projects, Gunn said, “Nothing is on hold.”

Another fan posted a screenshot that claimed director Andy Muschietti said work on the Batman film based on The Brave and the Bold was on hold amid the merger.

“It doesn’t sound like something Andy would have said, but the project is in no way on hold,” Gunn replied on Threads.

Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in 2022 and would later outline their plan for the universe they were building, calling it DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. One of the projects confirmed was Batman: The Brave and the Bold, separate from Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The film would center on the Dark Knight and his son, Damien Wayne, as Robin, who is quite the firecracker and unaware of his relationship with the superhero.

Christina Hodson has been set to write the film, with Andy Muschietti on board to direct.

DC Studios recently premiered the Lanterns series, set in the same DC universe, and it may be laying the groundwork for the future Batman film. The premiere episode mentioned Gotham City, with Kelly Macdonald’s Kerry Kane revealing she’s from the same place as the Dark Knight.

Following the release of Supergirl this summer, Gunn will revisit David Corenswet’s Clark Kent in the sequel film Superman: Man of Tomorrow, set to open on July 9, 2027. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently teased that the sequel already looks “amazing.”
