Pablo Larraín’s ‘My Sad Dead’ Trailer: “The Dead Start To Make Themselves Present”

EXCLUSIVE: Here’s the trailer for Pablo Larraín’s Netflix miniseries . Based on stories by acclaimed Argentine author Mariana Enriquez, the psychological horror will play in competition at the San Sebastian Film Festival later this month.

Produced by Larraín’s Fabula, the much-anticipated series tells the story of Ema, a retired doctor grappling with grief after her mother’s death. She can see and speak with the dead around her, including her own mother.

Mercedes Morán, Dolores Fonzi, Alejandra Flechner, and Carolina Álvarez star.

Per the synopsis, the arrival of Ema’s niece, Julie, and the murder of three local teenagers trigger a strange phenomenon that breaks the fragile balance between the living and the dead. What had been Ema’s burden then begins to spread throughout the neighborhood: the dead start to make themselves present, and no one will be able to escape the sound of their own ghosts.

“Living can sometimes be a truly terrifying experience; reality can induce sheer panic. Everyday life holds moments of terror, a quiet, unshowy kind of terror, stemming from things that are constantly close to you and, for that very reason, can be the most dangerous,” Larraín said.

“My Sad Dead shows us a city, poverty, violence, and people and social classes that have been forgotten. There is abandonment, death, and love, but at its core, the terror lies in the everyday.”

The miniseries will run to four parts. The cast is rounded out by Carlos Portaluppi, Germán de Silva, and Chilean actress Luz Jiménez. It drops on Netflix on September 24.
