‘Sunday In The Park With George’ Revival Delayed After Ariana Grande & Jonathan Bailey Exit

The West End revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Sunday in the Park with George has now been delayed following the exits of Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey.

Producer Empire Street Productions posted on Instagram that the planned 2027 release “will no longer proceed as scheduled.” It said the company “retain the rights with a view to presenting the production in 2028.”

The decision represents a U-turn after producers had initially said the show would go on following Grande’s exit. However, Deadline revealed a few weeks later that Bridgerton star Bailey was also dropping out. At the time he said his support for Grande is “unwavering.”

Grande’s high-profile Sunday in the Park exit came at the end of her arena tour and was explained by her reps as being “a much-deserved break from public facing work and appearances which has lead to endless, ongoing public scrutiny.”

Deadline broke news of the London revival at the end of last year.

The Pulitzer-winning 1984 Broadway musical was inspired by the painting from French artist Georges Seurat. The plot revolves around George, a fictionalized version of Seurat, who immerses himself deeply in painting his masterpiece, and his great-grandson, a conflicted and cynical contemporary artist.
