Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis has come off the page to the small screen in Prime Video’s adaptation of the best-selling romance novel, directed by Claire Scanlon.
The story centers PhD student Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart), who throws herself into a fake dating situation with Dr. Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman), aka Dr. Evil. Carlsen has a reputation for being unfeeling and strict with his Stanford University graduate students, but after Olive kisses him with zero warning to convince her best friend Ahnn (Rachel Marsh) that she no longer has feelings for Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), she finds he has a soft side.
The love story also highlights challenges that women in stem face in addition to the layered “fake” relationship that becomes very real in some ways. Olive’s roommate Malcolm (Jaboukie Young-White) despises Dr. Evil, and when Carlsen’s friend Dr. Tom Benton (Arty Froushan) comes into the picture, things get shaken up.

Gracie Abrams’ “Mess It Up” kicks off the film, and a karaoke scene features a song that hints at the film’s turning point. Plus, a Selena Gomez song soundtracks the famous Chapter 16 scene.
