Jack Rooke Teases Spice Girls Biopic In Works: “If The Beatles Get Four Films, The Spice Girls Need A Big Comedy Romp”

While the four-part Beatles biopic is underway, another British pop invasion could get the big-screen treatment next.

Big Boys creator Jack Rooke recently teased that he’s developing a “fun comedy drama” about the Spice Girls, having written a script with “a lovely little group of gals and gays” that he hopes to get into production.

“I don’t know how much I can say, but yes, I have been developing something that is, I would say, more than a music biopic,” he revealed on BBC Sounds’ Sidetracked. “It’s like a sort of fun comedy drama.”

Rooke added, “So, there has been a script written with me and a lovely little group of gals and gays. But that’s all I can say, and we don’t know what’s going on with it. Maybe one day, if people would like to watch that, that would be amazing.”

Explaining that the British girl group was the first time he saw “working class women be ambitious in British pop culture,” Rooke reasoned that a Spice Girls biopic would be just as culturally significant as Sam Mendes’ The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event, which has been in production this summer.

“I’m like, if we’re gonna have these four films about the Beatles, then I do think we need a big comedy romp about the Spice Girls, but that is me,” quipped Rooke. “I’ve said too much. But that would be my dream and desire.”

Rooke’s update on the project comes after the Spice Girls marked the 30th anniversary of their debut album Spice last week, having recently secured streaming rights to their hit 1997 musical comedy Spice World.
