Jimmy Smits has joined the fourth and final season of , which AMC+ confirmed will premiere in 2027. The streamer released a teaser Tuesday that introduces Smits’ character at the end of the clip.
“Welcome home, son,” Smits character says to a confused-looking and bloody Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus(, then fades to black. Smits plays Captain Alejandro Perkins, a former U.S. Navy officer and medical doctor who found a unique way to thrive during the apocalypse.
Season 3 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon tracked Carol and Daryl as they continue their journey towards home and the ones they love. As they struggle to find their way back, the path takes them farther astray, leading them through distant lands with ever-changing and unfamiliar conditions as they witness the various effects of the Walker apocalypse.
In the final season, while crossing the ravaged badlands of Spain, Daryl (Reedus) and Carol (McBride) grasp onto hope – and each other – as uncertainty about their future grows.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon also stars Romain Levi, Eduardo Noriega, Óscar Jaenada, Candela Saitta and Hugo Arbués.
The final season was announced during the show’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2025. Showrunner David Zabel said at the time that the final season “will really allow us to to complete the story of Daryl and Carol in Spain, and it will be very emotional and powerful. It will also complete this part of the characters’ journey, the European adventure, and so, it’s the last season of this iteration of the show. And then, what lies beyond that for these characters, we will see. I’m sure there’s plenty, and we’re always talking about it, but it’ll be the fourth and final season.”
