Gas prices across the country, after declining some of April, peaked in May.

The Iran war has led to higher prices at the gas pump.

Gas prices in the United States, up by nearly 40% since the U.S. and Israel launched the war, have soared as the global oil supply constricts.

Now at a national average of around $4 per gallon, according to data from motor club AAA, this price increase is straining already-stretched budgets in households across the country.

NBC News is tracking gas prices and how they change at the national, state and county levels, and will be updating this article daily with the latest data.

Average gas prices have increased more than a dollar since the U.S. and Israel first attacked Iran.

In five states — Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon and Washington — average gas prices are at or near $5 per gallon. In California prices are near $6, the highest in the nation. States toward the middle of the country are paying the least, according to AAA data. According to one analysis, the increase in gas prices since the start of the war has cost Americans more than $30 billion.

Fuel costs aren’t limited to gas. Jet fuel prices have been surging as well, leading airlines to increase airfares and pressing Spirit Airlines to shutter.

Oil prices have spiked and then see-sawed, as a ceasefire was announced and then extended. Experts said that gas prices could start declining in April, and after multiple weeks of gradual decline gas prices shot up to new highs. Since mid-May, the average national gas price has dropped more than 60 cents.
