Evan Rachel Wood has shared her thoughts about not returning to Practical Magic 2.
In a recent interview, the star said it was “sad” she was not asked back to reprise her role in the film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
“It is sad, because we bonded with that cast so much as children, and so to miss out on the opportunity to look at that cast and look at that house as an adult and see the history in our eyes, it’s something that can’t be faked,” Wood told Entertainment Tonight during the red carpet of The Shards premiere. “I’m sad that doesn’t get to exist, especially for the fans.”
Wood starred in the 1998 film based on the Alice Hoffman novel of the same name, playing the role of Kylie Owens, Bullock’s eldest daughter who acts more like Kidman’s Gilly. However, in the sequel, Kylie is played by Joey King.

The novel Practical Magic spawned multiple books, which were prequels like “The Rules of Magic” (2017) and “Magic Lessons” (2020). The forthcoming “The Book of Magic” is the novel being adapted into the film, which will also release on September 11.
“I read the book, and it seems like they’re not following the book,” Wood said. “I think in the book it would have made sense to bring me back; I think in the way they’re redoing it and approaching it, it didn’t make sense.”
When the sequel was announced, Wood spoke out about not being asked to reprise her role, saying in an Instagram Story post, “I am getting asked about this a lot, so I’ll just clear it up now; I was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel. I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are re-casting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.”
Practical Magic 2 also recast Bullock’s Sally’s daughter Antonia with Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, which Alexandra Artrip played in the 1998 film. The cast of the film also includes Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod.
