Mason Thames’ Hiccup will be back in the saddle for a live-action How To Train Your Dragon 2 next year.
Universal first announced plans for the sequel film at CinemaCon 2025, before the first live-action remake even came out. The early green light signaled major confidence in the franchise reboot ahead of the June theatrical release of How To Train Your Dragon (2025).

As of the CinemaCon announcement, the pic’s current release date is June 11, 2027.
Who is in the cast of the live-action How To Train Your Dragon 2?
Alongside Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn will all return to their respective roles of Astrid, Stoic the Vast, Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut.
Cate Blanchett, who voiced Hiccup’s longlost mother in the animated second film, will reprise the role in live-action, just as Gerard Butler has done with Hiccup’s father, Stoic the Vast.
Deadline broke the news that Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will portray the live-action version of Drago, main villain in the second installment. Ólaffson is known for his role in Severance, and he will also portray Thor in Prime Video’s God of War.
Phil Dunster (Rooster, Ted Lasso) will play Eret, son of Eret, another popular character from the second story.
What will the live-action How To Train Your Dragon 2 film be about?
If the animated version is anything to go by, viewers will learn the lore of Hiccup’s mother, Valka (Blanchett), who was thought to be dead after a large dragon took her away. But it turns out, Hiccup gets his nurturing disposition toward dragons from his mother, who has learned to coexist along the creatures, who aren’t as violent as the islanders of Berk first thought them to be.

Unfortunately, a new villain is sailing the seas, one who has figured out how to dominate dragons through fear and making them feel small, Drago. And he controls an alpha that can then make all the smaller dragons submit, just as they did with the big beast that vikings and dragons fought together at the nest in the first films.
The animated How To Train Your Dragon 2 also introduced a Light Fury, basically a white version of Toothless, as his potential mate, so there is also that to look forward to.

Dean DeBlois returns to write, direct and executive produce the next entry in this iconic franchise.
Marc Platt will produce for his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions alongside Adam Siegel, President of Marc Platt Productions. The film is set to bow on June 11, 2027. Senior Vice President of Production Lexi Barta will oversee the film on behalf of the Studio.
