Hayley Atwell was disappointed about the demise of Peggy Carter.
In an interview at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention in London, Atwell told attendees that she was frustrated by Captain Carter’s storyline in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Cameoing in the film as an alternate to Captain America, Carter — an MCU fixture since 2011 — was apparently killed off by Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) with her own shield.
Atwell said: “If I’m really like brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene. It’s so small, and she gets frisbeed to death.”
The actress said she pleaded with colleagues on set to make changes to the scene. “I tried on set to kind of go, ‘Can I just add? Can I just suggest?’ And they were like, ‘Sure, but no.’”

She continued: “I felt that was like a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character.”
Atwell, who is expected to return as Carter in Avengers: Doomsday later this year, said the character was having “fun” in the Captain Carter guise — and she hopes for more of the same. “I hope maybe one day in the future they’ll give her more in that capacity,” she teased.
It’s not the first time Atwell has discussed her misgivings about Carter’s cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
In 2023, she told the Happy Sad Confused podcast: “When she was like, ‘I could do this all day’ and then followed by she’s immediately cut in half by a frisbee. And the audience being like, ‘She can’t do it all day. Apparently you can’t, so, egg on your face.’ That doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.”
Earlier in the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi interview, Atwell revealed that she uses Carter’s line “I know my value” in her contract negotiations with Marvel. “If I’m able to say these lines with conviction, I’ve got to embody them myself,” she added.
