After 102 games across 16 cities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has a final, with defending champion Argentina coming from behind for a 2-1 victory over England in Wednesday’s semifinal to advance to the title game against Spain.

The final matchup Sunday, July 19, at New York/New Jersey Stadium in East Meadowlands, NJ., means Spain could win its second World Cup after triumphing in 2010, while Argentina and its star Leo Messi could defend the title they won in 2022 in Qatar. Argentina also won in 1986 and 1978.

Argentina booked its chance to defend its title after scoring two late goals, including one in stoppage time, to erase a deficit against England, which again fell short of playing for a World Cup it won only once — 60 years ago. Messi assisted on both goals in the game.

Spain reached the final with a 2-0 victory over France in the other semifinal Tuesday; the latter country, a pre-tournament favorite, missed out by one game returning to the final for a third consecutive World Cup.
