It’s been a long year of waiting since It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia patriarch Frank Reynolds (Danny DeVito) ended the series’ 17th season with lovestruck plans to marry his Golden Bachelor hook-up and poultry heiress Samantha (DeVito’s former Taxi co-star Carol Kane), and it certainly looks like the love birds just might defy all odds to actually tie the knot.
As long as no one dies first. Oh, wait…
Among the many clues in the fast-moving 18th season trailer released Wednesday is one that doesn’t portend well for Frank’s marital bliss: Samantha begins the trailer healthy enough but goes full-on Weekend at Bernie’s before she can say “I Do.”
But that comes after Frank’s daughter Dee (Kaitlin Olson) gives Samantha a crash course on everything that marriage to Frank entails. No wonder Sam got very cold feet.

For Sunny fans, though, the new trailer is a treat, providing a fast-moving glimpse of some of the longtime favorite supporting characters who will be joining Frank, Dee, Charlie, Mac and Dennis in the upcoming season that launches August 17 on FXX/Hulu.

The trailer begins with a scene in which the Paddy’s Gang is dressed in Renaissance Faire attire (shades of the series’ classic period costume Season 4 episode “The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell”). From there the action seems to shift to some Frank and Sam wedding prep with such old-favorite characters as The Waitress, Gail the Snail, Uncle Jack, the McPoyles, Artemis Dubois, Cricket and even, unless eyes deceive, one of Frank’s favorite sex workers.
In any case, here’s the official synopsis:
In season 18, It’s Always Sunny continues its return to its roots, with 10 jam-packed setups only the Gang could find themselves in. Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob Mac), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) are wrapped up in salvaging inheritances from a dead woman, surviving tent encampments and the great inside-outside divide between the haves and have-nots, withstanding job loss at the hands of workplace automation, embracing a newfound appreciation for neurodivergence, questioning the fabric of society against conspiracy theories, and of course — the biggest elephant in the room — outlasting the public’s pendulum swing against drinking. Not to mention battling nerds, LARPers, and a particularly petulant McPoyle clan at the Renaissance Faire or sportswashing their way back into the good graces of their community by sponsoring a Little League team. All the while trying to maintain order in their personal lives and at Paddy’s, which have become increasingly lawless and erratic.
FXX & Hulo further warn: “Get ready for some of the series’ most outrageous moments and star cameos yet. So, step right up to the plate and brace yourself for one hell of a swing. The Gang may be into their 50s and 80s now, but their behavior is more out of control than ever. Who said with age comes wisdom? That person sure is a jabroni.”
