Nearly five years later, Miles Teller is hoping Top Gun 3 gets a clear runway to begin production soon.
Following news that the third installment is officially in the works at Paramount, the actor noted that “everybody’s really excited” about reprising their roles once Tom Cruise finishes a sequel of another one of his early hits.
“Tom, I think he’s said the next thing he’s doing is he’s going to race some cars, that’s Days of Thunder,” he said on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “And then I hope he wants to fly some planes, too, ‘cause we would love to do it.”
Teller added, “Tom is very gracious and he was the closest thing to a mentor that I think a lot of us ever had in this business, and he’s always available. I’ve had to hang up on Tom because he’s so excited, he really is so invested.”

After starring in 1986’s Top Gun, Cruise reprised his role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), the long-awaited sequel surpassing $1.4 billion worldwide, becoming the actor’s highest-grossing movie and earning an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Last May, Cruise teased that he’s “working on” another Top Gun movie, in addition to Days of Thunder 2, which was officially announced in August.
Following Paramount’s announcement at Cinemacon in April that Top Gun 3 is officially in the works, Maverick co-writer Christopher McQuarrie said in May that he and Ehren Kruger have the story “already in the bag” for the third movie.
