New York City’s AMC Kips Bay 15 To Close At Year’s End

AMC Theaters on Monday said it expects that AMC Kips Bay 15, the second biggest multiplex in the exhibitor’s New York City footprint, to close its doors at year’s end.

“We expect that AMC Kips Bay 15 will continue operating until the end of 2026, at which time the theatre will close following the property owner’s decision to exercise its contractual right to terminate the theatre’s lease before its scheduled expiration,” AMC said in a statement provided to Deadline.

No other details were provided.

The multiplex, in the Murray Hill section of Manhattan on Second Avenue near the East River, opened in 1999, with AMC taking over operations in 2006. It offers the second-most screens in AMC’s Manhattan fleet, behind only the AMC Empire 25 in bustling Times Square.

Kips Bay 15 was known by some not to be fully kept up, though it still provided solid grosses, per sources. After its closure, NYC denizens can go to either Union Square or 19th St. East 6 AMC locations.

Per the AMC website, there are currently nine multiplexes in Manhattan. The northernmost cinema in the city is the AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9, while the southernmost is the AMC Village 7 on Third Avenue between Washington Square Park and Tompkins Square Park in the East Village.

AMC said today that details are being finalized for Kips Bay, with a formal closure date to be announced later, adding that “we are immensely grateful to our guests for their loyalty and support throughout the years.”
