‘Obsession’, ‘The Invite’ & ‘Young Washington’ Power On, ‘Maddie’s Secret’ Tops $1 Million — Specialty Box Office

Indies The Invite (A24, $15 million cume), Young Washington (Angel Studios, $41 million cume) and Obsession (Focus Features, $258 million cume) are sitting in the top ten in, respectively, week 4, week 3, and week 10. The Olivia Wilde comedy starring herself, Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton grossed $3.9 million for the three days on about 2,100 screens. Curry Barker’s massive breakout is eyeing $2.5 million on 1,500 screens. And John Erwin’s biopic starring William Franklyn-Miller as George grossed $3.7 million at 2,200 locations. There’s a sequel in the works, 1776, for Angel’s strong performing historical epic.

The weekend dominated by The Odyssey and World Cup final also saw Maddie’s Secret from Magnolia Pictures — by and starring John Early — pass $1 million in week 5 on 84 screens, with an estimated $80.5k gros.

In moderate release, Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass from Sony Pictures Classics is looking at $124.4k on 357 screens in week 2 for a cume of $1.3 million.

Kino Lorber documentary Mary Oliver: Saved By The Beauty Of The World is eying $49k on 50 screens for a $171k cume in week 3. 

New limited openings: Oscilloscope’s The Kidnapping of Arabella grossed about $11k at the IFC Center in NYC. Carolina Cavalli’s Italian road movie starring Chris Pine and Benedetta Porcaroli opened to multiple sold-out screenings. Adds La next week.  

Sundance prize-winning doc American Pachuco: The Legend Of Luis  Valdez debuted to $7.5k at the Film Forum in New York with a sold out show Friday night and a solid weekend turnout.

Jewish summer camp comedy The Floaters grossed $10k in week 2 on three screens for a $26.3k cume.  

Remake from Music Box Films grossed $8.3k at six locations in week 2 for a $43.25k cume.

Greenwich Entertainment’s Reading Lolita in Tehran expanded to Los Angeles’s Laemmle Royal while holding over at the Angelika in NY, grossing an estimated $7k for a cume of $24k. Expands to about 100 theaters next week.
