David Ayer’s latest, Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt, has been added to the official lineup at this year’s San Sebastián Film Festival.
Heart of the Beast will screen out of competition, with both Ayer and Pitt in attendance.
The film, from Paramount, follows Pitt as a Special Forces officer who, accompanied by his retired combat dog, must survive in the Alaskan wilderness following a harrowing plane crash. The film marks Pitt’s first return to San Sebastián since 2009, when he presented Inglourious Basterds alongside Quentin Tarantino.
Heart of the Beast reunites Pitt and Ayer for the first time since Fury, their 2014 WWII drama for Sony. The film was written by Cameron Alexander. Paramount will release the film on September 25.

Producers on the project included Olivia Hamilton, Marty Bowen, Ayer and Pitt. Executive producers include Damien Chazelle, Scott Lumpkin, Cameron Alexander, Chris Long, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, Andrew Lary, Sophie Cassidy, and Zack Conroy.
Heart of the Beast is the latest high-profile addition to this year’s San Sebastián lineup. Also screening at the festival are titles like Mike Leigh’s latest feature Tender Loving Care and My Sad Dead, a new series from Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín.
My Sad Dead will screen at San Sebastián in its feature-length format. Starring are Mercedes Morán, Dolores Fonzi, and Carolina Álvarez. The project is based on four short stories by Mariana Enríquez and tells the story of Ema, a woman with the ability to see and hear the dead. The San Sebastián screening will be a World Premiere.
Leigh’s Tender Loving Care will arrive at San Sebastián after a showing at TIFF. Marion Bailey, Paul Jesson, Kate O’Flynn, and Alice Bailey Johnson star in the film. No synopsis for Tender Loving Care has been provided on either the San Sebastian or TIFF website. San Sebastian simply describes the film as an “insightful exploration of the contemporary world.”
The festival runs from September 18 to 26.
