The surge in artificial intelligence (A.I.) adoption is placing unprecedented demands on the U.S. power supply, as highlighted by Fox News anchor Bret Baier in a recent report. According to the 2024 Pew Research Poll, the internet usage among adults has reached 96%, a significant jump from 48% in May 2000. This increase in connectivity is pushing energy providers to prepare for an uptick in electricity demand.

Constellation President and CEO Joseph Dominguez noted that while internet consumption initially lagged behind predictions, the adoption of A.I. has accelerated at an unprecedented rate. White House A.I. and Crypto Czar David Sacks corroborated this, stating that A.I. adoption is outpacing previous technologies, including the internet and the iPhone. Despite this rapid uptake, a Fox News poll indicates that 57% of registered voters rarely or never use A.I., although experts anticipate that usage will continue to grow.

Data centers, essential for supporting the growing A.I. infrastructure, require substantial electricity to operate efficiently. Gregory Allen from the Wadhwani A.I. Center emphasized the immense power needs of modern A.I. models, which can demand between 1 and 5 gigawatts of electricity—equivalent to the output of multiple Hoover Dams.

The strain on resources is prompting tech companies to seek reliable energy sources. Nuclear energy, with its consistent output, is emerging as a favored option. Meta Platforms is investing $800 million in a new hyperscale data center in Kansas City, Missouri, which will likely benefit from advancements in nuclear power infrastructure. The reduction in regulatory hurdles, as facilitated by executive orders, is expediting the development of such facilities, ensuring a steady electricity supply for future data centers. As the demand for A.I. and internet usage continues to rise, the collaboration between tech giants and energy providers will be crucial in maintaining a resilient and efficient power grid.
