EXCLUSIVE: Stephanie Laing, the two-time Emmy winner behind Apple TV’s Your Friends & Neighbors and the recent true-life Rose Byrne drama Tow, is set to direct Runaway Wedding for Working Title Films, sources tell Deadline.
Reps for Working Title declined to comment.
Runaway Wedding follows underage lovers Matt and Anna, who elope to the chagrin of their parents, who chase them across the country — and unexpectedly fall in love, themselves.
We hear that Laing will work from a script by Adam Brooks, whose credits include the Working Title rom-coms Definitely, Maybe and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, as well as the more recent Netflix pic The Life List. Liza Chasin, whose 3dot Productions is responsible for the latter title, is producing.
Released in March, Laing’s critically acclaimed Tribeca drama Tow is based on the true story of Amanda Ogle (Byrne), an unhoused Seattle woman who fought her way out of tow-company hell to reclaim her life and the car that held it all together after receiving a tow bill for $21,634, in a herculean, 369-day-long effort. Dominic Sessa, Ariana DeBose, Octavia Spencer and Simon Rex also starred.

A director and exec producer on Apple’s hit Jon Hamm series Your Friends & Neighbors, heading into its third season, Laing has also recently worked on Apple series including the Byrne-led Physical, the Emmy-nominated Palm Royale starring Kristen Wiig, and Stick starring Owen Wilson. She won Emmys for her work on HBO’s Veep and Tracey Ullman’s HBO sketch series Tracey Takes On… and is repped by CAA and Linden Entertainment.
Screenwriter Brooks is repped by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
