India and the European Union are engaged in critical trade negotiations in New Delhi this week, aiming to bridge differences on key issues to meet a year-end deadline for an agreement, as reported by Reuters. The talks, which resumed in 2022, have intensified following the re-election of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration doubled tariffs on Indian goods last month.

Data from the IndexBox platform indicates that these U.S. tariffs, which rose to 50%, have significantly impacted key Indian export sectors. The move has created heightened urgency for New Delhi to secure alternative trade partnerships.

Eleven of the 23 negotiation chapters have been finalized, covering areas including customs procedures and digital trade. However, significant obstacles remain. India has declined to make concessions on agricultural and dairy products to protect farmer interests, while the EU is seeking greater market access for its automobiles and alcoholic beverages. Other points of contention include rules of origin, food safety standards, and the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism.

Brussels has also raised concerns with New Delhi over its purchases of discounted Russian oil, which EU officials state undermine sanctions against Moscow. This issue is not expected to dominate the talks but could influence the European Parliament’s approval of any final deal. EU Trade Chief Maros Sefcovic and Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen are scheduled to continue discussions with Indian officials later this week.
