EXCLUSIVE: Annie Gonzalez (Flamin’ Hot, Jenni) has been set as the lead in the upcoming Vanessa Guillén biopic from Jolene Rodriguez and Jorge Xolalpa of Mighty Aphrodite Pictures.
Gonzalez will play Mayra Guillén, the slain U.S. Army Specialist’s older sister, who has also signed on to the project as an executive producer. The as-yet-untitled narrative feature drama will tell Vanessa Guillén’s story from the point of view of Mayra Guillén.
Developed in collaboration with the Guillén family, the project will chronicle the life of the young Army recruit whose 2020 disappearance and murder at Fort Hood in Texas sparked a nationwide outcry and calls for reform within the U.S. military.
Guillén had long had the goal of serving in the Army but, after being assigned to Fort Hood, told friends and family of being sexually harassed by a superior. She did not report it officially for fear of retaliation. She was later bludgeoned to death by fellow soldier Aaron David Robinson. Guillén had been missing for more than two months before some of her remains were found buried along the Leon River. Robinson fled Fort Hood after learning of the discovery. When law enforcement tried to apprehend him, he fatally shot himself.

The film seeks to celebrate Guillén’s life while honoring the tireless advocacy of her family, whose campaigning inspired lasting legislative change and amplified the voices of military families.
Rodriguez and Xolalpa serve as the film’s producers. In addition to Mayra Guillén, Natalie Khawam and Alejandra Palomera also executive produce.
The production team is currently in the process of identifying a director to lead the project. Further announcements regarding the creative team and additional casting will be shared as the film moves through its development phase.
Gonzalez is no stranger to leading biopics about powerful women. In 2023, she executive produced and starred as Mexican singer Jenni Rivera, known by her fans as “La Diva De La Banda,” in the ViX film Jenni. She also portrayed Judy Montañez, wife of Richard Montañez, who, it has been claimed, invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos in the lauded Eva Longoria-directed Flamin’ Hot (2023). Most recently, she was featured in the ensemble cast of the Amazon MGM Studios Original film Relationship Goals, directed by Linda Mendoza and led by Kelly Rowland and Cliff “Method Man” Smith. Up next, Gonzalez will star in Wild Ones, from first-time feature filmmaker Manuel Figueroa. She is repped by Innovative Artists and Granderson Des Rochers.
